OUr BRAND
Kalsoni is more than a modest activewear brand—it’s a movement empowering women and girls to pursue active, healthy lives without compromise. Recognizing the lack of inclusive, culturally sensitive, and modest options in the activewear and sports industries, CEO & Founder Muna Mohamed set out to create change. Kalsoni bridges the gap by providing high-performance activewear designed for comfort, movement, and confidence while upholding the values of the women it serves.
Our journey began with a simple yet powerful mission: to remove the barriers that have historically excluded women and girls from sports due to a lack of appropriate apparel. Kalsoni was built on a community-centered design approach, ensuring that every piece reflects the needs and aspirations of those who wear it.
Meet the Founder: Muna Mohamed
CEO & FOUNDER
Muna Mohamed’s passion for sports, experience as a Black Muslim woman navigating the athletic space, and dedication to community-driven solutions led her to create Kalsoni. As a former basketball player and youth coach, she saw firsthand how a lack of appropriate activewear hindered women and girls from fully participating in sports. This inspired her to launch a brand that ensures no one has to choose between their identity and their ability to compete.
The foundation of Kalsoni was laid through a groundbreaking community-based research project titled “Impact of Culturally Sensitive Apparel Co-Design on the Physical Activity of East African Adolescent Girls.” This study examined the effects of co-designed activewear on engaging girls in physical activity. During this project, Muna helped develop the first-ever culturally sensitive sports uniform for Muslim girls—now worn by athletes on an AAU basketball team she co-founded.
Recognizing the impact of this research, Muna continued to explore ways to expand the accessibility of modest activewear, leading her to establish Kalsoni. Her mission is clear: to empower women and girls to be physically active while upholding their values of modesty and confidence. She strives to create a world where no woman or girl has to compromise her beliefs to pursue a healthy, active lifestyle.
Through Kalsoni, Muna is not only designing apparel but also building a movement that amplifies the voices of women and girls in sports. She is committed to fostering representation, increasing access to physical activity, and ensuring that all women—regardless of background—feel seen, heard, and empowered. Muna Mohamed serves as the CEO and Founder of Kalsoni, leading the brand’s mission to redefine inclusivity in sports and activewear.
